Professional development means taking advantage of education and a vast choice of learning options to further your personal, or professional skills to stay on top, make more money or perhaps move higher in your organization. With the high unemployment rate, professional development might get you that sought after job. No matter why you may want to pursue development, it is well worth the time and effort. Professional development is for both personal and career opportunities and advancement. But who cares most about your progress: you. So get serious and develop a plan to succeed. Follow these steps to start on your path.
- Goals
State your goal whether it is personal or career oriented. Be clear about your vision and imagine where you want to be and when. Identify what is important to you, what do you enjoy and where is your passion? Determine what it takes to move ahead or make that new promotion. Ask yourself questions --- What do you like doing? What are you happy at? What can you succeed in? Describe your perfect job.Talk to people about each option you identify and then further refine them. You are narrowing in on the goal, the ultimate career path or personal objective. It should be clear, focused and realistic. Achievable in a short timeframe. Now you should have your goals which all action eminates from. Now you can compare where you are with where you want to be and produce a plan to move you forward.
- Comparison
List what your vision for your new career or personal goal requires. You can't be a surgeon if you are an artist without planning to acquire significant education. Are you working at a company that gives seminars and course work that could send you into a more lucrative position? List your current education. Then list what training or education you might need to reach your goal and their sequence. If you are a draftsman and you wish to be an architect, college might be necessary with a specific order of classes. Compare where you are financially and what monies you may need to obtain the required learning skills to move forward. Make a list.
- Timing
Place a completion time for each item on your list. Make it realistic and take into account not only when the class or course or group meeting will happen but what costs will be incurred. This may include work missed or cost considerations. And then revise your list to reflect your goal. Move forward through self discipline. Each step forward brings you closer to your goal.
- Resources
There are many resources out there to help you on your way. SCORE offers you free counselors so take advantage of this service. Talk with your class or college teachers and add them to your group of mentors. Go to trade or local organizations that other people following the same or similar paths may be. Meet them and form a bond. For example, if you are a writer, join a writing group.
- Update
Your professional development, like your life, is a flowing stream that grows and changes overtime. Make sure you frequently revisit your vision and goals and update as necessary.
Successful people achieve their goals through planning and independent action: be one of them.
